FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. How do I request respite care?
Foster parents can request one weekend per month of respite care by contacting the Associate Director. Should additional respite be required, this must be approved by the child’s Chambliss case manager and the foster home staff. It is helpful to give as much notice as possible. Respite cannot be arranged between foster families, without the prior knowledge and authorization of the foster home staff.
2. Can I take my foster child on vacation?
Yes, but you must get prior approval from your DCS caseworker if you are staying out-of-state overnight. You’ll need to provide details such as travel dates, destination, and accommodations.
3. What paperwork do i turn in each month?
Journal notes (daily for Level 2 and weekly for Level 1), billing form, mileage, medication logs, and receipts must be submitted to the Associate Director before the 5th of each month for the previous month.
4. Am I allowed to let people i know watch my foster child?
Yes. The reasonable and prudent parenting standard empowers foster parents to make decisions about routine activities including childcare provided they use their best judgment when determining if the individual is an appropriate caregiver for the child/youth.
5. What do i do if my foster child needs to see a doctor after hours or during the weekend?
There are specific Urgent Care locations that accept Tenncare. Please see our Resources page for a list of those. Also, please notify the on call worker if the child is taken to an urgent care or emergency room.
6. What should I do if I suspect abuse or neglect by the biological family during visits?
Report any concerns immediately to your Chambliss case manager and DCS caseworker. If you believe the child is in immediate danger, call the DCS Child Abuse Hotline at 1-877-237-0004.
7. Can I enroll my foster child in extracurricular activities?
Yes, and it’s encouraged! Foster parents can generally authorize participation in activities such as sports, clubs, and church groups. Chambliss will reimburse 50% of one, approved activity.
8. Who is responsible for transporting foster children to visits, appointments, or school?
Transportation is typically the foster parent’s responsibility. However, DCS or your Chambliss case manager may assist with transportation with prior notice.
9. Can I adopt my foster child if parental rights are terminated?
Yes, foster parents are often considered first for adoption if the child becomes legally free. DCS will discuss the permanency plan and adoption process with you if this becomes an option.
